Makarena “Maki” Alvarez is one of our talented Project Leads at Holland. With nearly a decade of industry experience, she has expertly led projects across hospitality, retail, and workplace design, some of which have earned various prestigious awards. She holds a Bachelor of Applied Interior Design from Mount Royal University and the NCIDQ certification. Specializing in creative design, 3D modelling and rendering, her problem-solving skills, discerning eye, and natural empathy make her an invaluable asset to every project.
Maki begins each project by establishing a strong sense of place, allowing every design decision to align with a cohesive vision. When challenges arise, she falls back on the established concept, guiding the project to develop holistically rather than in pieces. She has a natural ability to understand our clients’ needs, listening intently to ensure every detail of their vision is captured. She’s always open for a chat or a brainstorming session, and loves collaborating with our team to align on ideas. With a passion for our planet, and addressing climate change, she strives for timeless design, advocating for a more sustainable and responsible future in the industry.
Beyond design, Makarena is a first-generation Canadian-Chilean, fluent in Spanish, and conversational in French. She is an avid boxer, cycler, and enjoys outdoor activities like hiking and rock climbing. She also enjoys exploring and appreciating what Calgary has to offer.
