Integrated environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies are increasingly becoming a priority for organizations worldwide. At Holland, we’ve had the privilege of working with CEOs who understand that implementing their ESG strategies, and even transforming their organizational culture, can be done by reshaping the physical spaces where their teams work. Interestingly, ESG strategies can influence the design and construction of workplaces in several ways (Gensler, n.d.). In this article, we explore why CEOs are turning to workplace design to drive cultural change.

At Holland, we believe that successful workplace design considers employees' whole lives in mind, not just their professional life. That’s why we take into account their broader responsibilities, including family, health and wellness, personal interests and hobbies, and community. We also consider the unique perspectives of different generations and the implications for designing a workplace that meets the needs of a multi-generational workforce. This approach, which we call ‘whole life design’, aims to create solutions that promote wellness and productivity.

How can we provide equal opportunities for full participation? While policies and initiatives are key considerations when shifting organizational culture, the actual physical workspace, where employees spend a substantial amount of their time, also plays a crucial role in promoting inclusion efforts. As interior designers, we have a responsibility to prioritize health, safety and well-being. To fulfill this obligation, we consider employees' social locations and lived experiences that influence how they work.
