A career in interior design can feel both exciting and overwhelming. I’d describe my experience as a mix of exploration, creativity, and finding balance.

I joined Holland as a Design Assistant in February 2023 while pursuing my Bachelor of Interior Design at Yorkville University. Now, as a full-time Project Designer, I’d love to share a bit about my experience and the lessons I’ve learned along the way—especially for those just beginning their design careers.

Why Holland was the perfect fit

While searching for internships, I came across Holland and was immediately drawn to the way their work was presented online. The renders conveyed a thoughtful and deliberate design philosophy, and their emphasis on human-centred design really stood out to me. It was an approach I hadn’t encountered in other firms, and it aligned well with my own values. I believed Holland’s intentional, people-focused approach would provide me with a foundation where I could contribute meaningfully and continue to grow.

Balancing work and study as an intern

When I started at Holland, I was still fully immersed in my studies, so balancing academic demands with professional responsibilities was a challenge. What made it manageable—and genuinely rewarding—was the supportive environment. The team made me feel safe to share ideas, take risks, and make mistakes, knowing I’d receive the support and encouragement necessary to learn and improve.

It feels good to work with people who prioritize your well-being, recognize, and celebrate you. I’ve worked with various Project Leads as a Design Assistant and closely with Jenny as a Project Designer. Her mentorship has really boosted my confidence and helped me navigate complex projects while pushing me to grow in unexpected ways!

At Yorkville University, one of the most impactful lessons I learned was embracing the design process. Thinking outside the box, prototyping, and focusing on empathetic design became the foundation of my approach. Studio classes, especially in retail and healthcare design, pushed me to consider how spaces serve the people using them. Electives deepened my creative problem-solving skills, while my thesis work reinforced my belief in evidence-based design through research and analysis.

Holland helped me find balance and stay consistent while managing a full schedule and growing in my role. As a Design Assistant, I applied industry standards daily, deepening my knowledge through product sessions and CEUs. This hands-on experience truly made my coursework more tangible and easier to navigate.

Becoming a Project Designer

In January 2024, I transitioned into a full-time role as a Project Designer, and every day since has been a chance to grow and refine my skills. Working alongside different Project Leads has exposed me to different design approaches, and I’ve discovered a passion for construction administration, something I didn’t explore much in school but now has become one of my favourite parts of the job.

Collaborating with project teams has been equally inspiring. The creative energy of exchanging ideas among my colleagues and clients, building on one another’s perspectives has made the design process incredibly fulfilling.

I also had the opportunity to travel to learn more about the materials we gravitate towards when working on projects. It deepened my understanding of the tactile elements of design and their role in shaping the spaces I design.

Looking ahead

I graduated from my program in December 2024, and as I look ahead, I’m excited to keep growing, take on new challenges, and work on more projects with my team.

For anyone starting out in design, my advice is simple: embrace the process, stay inquisitive, and seek out an environment that nurtures your growth. For me, that environment has been Holland, and I’m excited to see where the journey leads next!
